Μη φοβού, μηδέ δειλιάτω η καρδία σου, ο Χριστός μας αοράτως σε βοηθεί κρυφία χειρί, σε δοκιμάζει δια να σου δώση την χάριν Του.
Όσον γεωργείται η γη της καρδίας και όσον πιο βαθειά ο γεωργός βάζει το αλέτρι, τόσον περισσότερον καρπόν θα δώση το χωράφι εις τον καιρόν του.
Ούτω κάνει και ο μέγας γεωργός, ο Θεός, την ψυχήν μας. Μας αφήνει να έρχονται πειρασμοί και θλίψεις και πόνος και στενοχωρία, να εισέρχωνται βαθειά εις την καρδίαν και πολλάκις να ευρισκώμεθα εις αδιέξοδον, το πώς θα τα καταφέρωμεν με αυτόν ή εκείνον τον πειρασμόν, και πάσχει και οδυνάται ο άνθρωπος, αλλά εις τους αγαπώντας τον Θεόν, συνεργεί ο Θεός να γίνωνται εις αγαθήν έκβασιν.

No matter how much we may suffer, the time will come when all will end and each one of us will be given repose in accordance with his labors. Are you afflicted? Are you in pain? Do you weep from the pressure of sorrowfull events? Are you weary? Take courage, for through such things the kingdom of God is acquired. But if you have it easy in everything and do not remember God, then grieve, for you are not walking the path that leads to God. Afflictions, sicknesses, and torments weary us continually so that we abhor this world and desire the world there, where Cherubim and Seraphim hymn God, where there is the real and true repose, the day without evening, the blessed light; while things here, in comparison with the eternal things, are dark and abominable. May our holy God grant us spiritual understanding, so that we always prefer the everlasting things, the highest good, our sweet God.

Δια πολλών θλίψεων θα σωθώμεν, παιδί μου, επί τον ταπεινόν και ησύχιον και τρέμοντα τους λόγους μου;». Αι θλίψεις ελευθερώνουν τον άνθρωπον, που τας υπομένει μετά χαράς και γνώσεως, από τας αμαρτίας του και τον κανόνα αυτών, δημιουργείται και πνευματικός χαρακτήρ, γίνεται ο άνθρωπος ελεήμων, ταπεινός, πράος κ.λ.π.
Εκείνος που δεν έχει αληθινήν γνώσιν των πειρδιότι ποίος άγιος ηγίασε ή άνθρωπος εσώθη, χωρίς να περάση από το καμίνι των διαφόρων πικριών; Αν εδώ πικρανθώμεν, εκεί, εις το άλλον κόσμον, ο Χριστός μας, θα μας γλυκάνη με την τόσον όμορφον βασιλείαν Του.
Όταν σου έρχεται η θλίψις, να παρηγορήσαι ότι και πάλιν θα σου έλθη η χαρά και η γαλήνη. Συνεχώς ενθυμού τον θάνατον, αυτή η μνήμη θα σου δίδη πολύ κουράγιο εις τα λυπηρά του ματαίου τούτου βίου και θα γεμίζη η ψυχή σου παρηγορίαν. Τα βάσανα της ζωής μίαν ημέραν, παιδί μου, θα λήξουν, διότι ο κόσμος παρέρχεται, μόνον ό,τι πράξη κανείς δια την δόλια του ψυχήν, εκείνο αιώνια θα μείνη ή προς ύψος ή προς βάθος και απώλειαν.

Man’s life is a martyrdom. Ever since we fell from true happiness we gather the fruit of disobedience: “Thorns and thistles will the earth bring forth to you” (Gen. 3:18 ) –the earth of the heart will, too. How will we know that we are exiles, if not through afflictions and torments?
There is no person who does not have something that afflicts him. Pious Christians are afflicted, too, but in the depths of their souls they also have the hope that one day the many afflictions will result in blessed repose for them. Without afflictions and sufferings let no one expect repose in the life beyond the grave. That life is for those who have labored and were heavy-laden by the weight of this present life.
Of course, the saints had much grace and spiritual strength, and they rejoiced in suffering. But we, and I first of all, suffer and sometimes our patience breaks. But glory be to God, Who enlightens us to repent and correct ourselves. “The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” (Mt. 26:41 ).

Νηστεία ουχί μόνον φαγητών, αλλά κυρίως αυστηρά νηστεία εις τας αισθήσεις. Αι αισθήσεις, τρεφόμεναι από τα έξωθεν πράγματα, διοχετεύουν ανάλογον δηλητήριον εις τον νουν και την καρδίαν, δια του οποίου αποθνήσκει από Θεού η ταλαίπωρος ψυχή. Οι νηπτικοί πατέρες μας πόσα δεν έχουν να μας είπουν δια την αγίαν νηστείαν των αισθήσεων.
Όλη η διδασκαλία στρέφεται κυρίως εις την κάθαρσιν του νοός από φαντασίας αμαρτωλάς και σκέψεις τοιαύτας και της καρδίας από αισθήματα μολυσματικά. Επίσης διδάσκουν ότι πρέπει να πατάσσωμεν το κάθε ηθικόν κακόν εν τη γενέσει του, ώστε να διατηρηθή η ψυχή καθαρά.
Απόλυτος ανάγκη είναι, μόλις ακροθιγώς προσεγγίση ο οιοσδήποτε κακός λογισμός, να τον διώκωμεν λέγοντας πάραυτα την ευχήν του Κυρίου.
Και όταν τοιουτοτρόπως αντιμετωπίζωμεν τους λογισμούς, τους προερχομένους εκ των αισθήσεων και του διαβόλου, πολύ σύντομα θα αισθανθώμεν την χαράν και την ωφέλειαν εκ της νηστείας των αισθήσεων.
Η Εύα, εάν ενήστευε την αίσθησιν των οφθαλμών, δεν θα εδηλητηρίαζε τα έκγονα της κοιλίας αυτής, δηλαδή όλους τους ανθρώπους, που εγεννήθηκαν εξ αυτής. Με ένα λόγον, η εγκράτεια των αισθήσεων σώζει τον άνθρωπον εκ της κολάσεως.

A person whose mouth always thanks God will by no means lack the blessing of God, but a person whose mouth grumbles and wounds his great Benefactor shall certainly be chastened by God.
He gave us our being; He gives us life; He preserves us in various ways with His divine providence. Through the death of His Son, He reconciled us who were previously His enemies and made us sons and heirs of His kingdom! He purifies us and sanctifies us through His holy Mysteries! He gives us the heavenly, most holy food and drink, that is, His All-holy Body and Precious Blood! He has also given us a guardian for our whole life! He will receive our soul and guide it to the eternal inheritance! But what am I saying?
Time would fail me to recount everything; I would be laboring in vain, trying to count the sand in the sea—the infinite benefactions of our good God! Then, even after so many countless good things, we grumble! Oh, my God, overlook our ingratitude and open our mind so that we grasp what Your paternal heart has bestowed upon us, and so that we render a little thanks in order that we may find forgiveness and mercy.

Ο Χριστός, μας επρόσταξε να συγχωρώμεν τους εχθρούς μας εβδομηκοντάκις επτά της ημέρας, πόσον μάλλον Αυτός, η άβυσσος της συγχωρήσεως! Εάν ηδύνασο να μετρήσης τας σταγόνας της βροχής και τους κόκκους της άμμου, τότε θα ηδύνασο να μετρήσης μικρόν την άπειρον ευσπλαχνίαν ενός απείρου Θεού.

Force yourselves in your spiritual duties, for forcefulness in spiritual things is like a solid wall that does not let the river run into the garden and destroy what the gardener has labored to grow. But if we are negligent, the river comes in and destroys everything! The Lord speaks to us about this in the Holy Gospel: “While the men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat” (Mt. 13:25 ). The more we compel ourselves, the more we shall gain. The more one works, the more he is paid. The life of a monk is a daily cross, a holy Golgotha, where Jesus is calling all of us who love Him to be crucified with Him, and then the soul will resurrect.

Ο άνθρωπος δια τας αμαρτίας του υποφέρει, και όμως η αγαθότης του Θεού, τους πόνους, που εγέννησεν η αμαρτία, τους λογίζεται ως εργασίαν πνευματικήν και δίδει βραβεία και μισθούς. Πώς να μη αγαπήσωμεν έναν τοιούτον Θεόν και να μη δώσωμεν όλην μας την ζωήν εις την λατρείαν Του!
Δυστυχώς όμως, παρ΄ όλα αυτά, ημείς Τον ξεχνούμεν, εγώ πρώτος, δια τούτο και παραβαίνομεν τας εντολάς Του, διότι εάν ενεθυμούμεθα τον Θεόν, θα ενεθυμούμεθα και τι διατάζει ο Θεός και ο φόβος προς Αυτόν θα μας καθιστά νομοταγείς και προσεκτικούς.
Θα ενεθυμούμεθα την κρίσιν, την γέενναν του πυρός, και θα εχύναμε δάκρυα μετανοίας, καθ΄ όσον μακράν υπάρχομεν δακρύων και πένθους, τόσον υπάρχομεν προσκεκολλημένοι εις τα γήϊνα και φθαρτά.
Η μέριμνα των άνω γεννά τον πόθον της κληρονομίας αυτών, δηλαδή των αιωνίων αγαθών και η αγαθή αύτη μέριμνα, μας αποσπά από την εφάμαρτον προσκόλλησιν επί των φθειρομένων προσκαίρων αγαθών. Δώη ημίν Κύριος ο Θεός σύνεσιν αγαθήν, όπως τακτοποιήσωμεν το θάμα της ψυχής μας, πριν ή φύγωμεν δια τον άλλον κόσμον.

“As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up” (Jn. 3:14 ). And just as all who were bitten by the serpents and looked upon the suspended brass serpent were healed, likewise every Christian who believes in our Christ and hastens to His life-bearing wounds (by eating His Flesh and drinking His all-holy Blood ), is cured from the bites of the spiritual serpent of sin. By this most holy nourishment, he is given life unto renewal in a new creation, that is, a new life in conformity with His life-giving commandments. Oh, how essential it is for us in every way to approach this heavenly banquet, which this supernatural mystery of the Holy Table provides for us!
The angels stand by invisibly. With utmost reverence the priests, who at this moment of the mystery are more honored than the angels, sacrifice the blameless Lamb. The angels minister and the faithful approach to eat and drink the Body and Blood of Christ: “Partake of the Body of Christ; taste of the fountain of immortality” to live in Christ and not die in sin. Therefore, “let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of the bread and drink of the cup”, according to the divine Apostle, because “he who eats and drinks in an unworthy manner, eats and drinks judgment to himself.
For if we would judge ourselves, we would not be judged. But when we are judged, we are chastened by the Lord” (cf. 1 Cor. 11:28-32 ). When someone wants to present himself to the king, he prepares himself for days—that is, with an overall preparation in cleanliness, speech, approach, manners, and so on—to attract the king’s sympathy and thus obtain the desired request.
Corresponding to the incomparable difference between the two kings, every Christian ought to prepare for holy communion in order to obtain mercy and forgiveness. Cunning, flattery, affectation, and lies often adorn someone who approaches an earthly king so that he may obtain what he wants. Whereas holiness, a humble spirit, and simplicity of soul—which is more precious than perishable gold—must adorn the faithful Christian approaching the King of kings, Who looks upon the inner man.
Let us also prepare ourselves with purified intellects, and, aspiring to the mortification of our senses from the passions, let us enter together with the holy Apostles into the Mystical Supper in purity, and let us partake of our sweet Jesus, so that He may abide with us unto the endless ages of ages. Amen; so be it!
