Πως λοιπόν θα δικαιολογηθώμεν, όταν σκεφθώμεν ότι ο Χριστός μας έπαθε τόσα φοβερά παθήματα, χωρίς να πράξη κανένα αμάρτημα, διότι ήτο Θεός; Σκέψου την φοβεράν συγκατάβασιν του απείρου Θεού, να γίνη άνθρωπος και να πάθη τόσα αισχύνης γέμοντα πάθη χάριν ημών των αμαρτωλών, των ενόχων και κατακρίτων! Να ραπισθή εις το πρόσωπον, να Τον μαστιγώσουν, να Τον υβρίσουν, να Τον σταυρώσουν, να αποθάνη με τον πιο κακόν θάνατον, «επικατάρατος πας ο κρεμάμενος επί ξύλου» ( Γαλ. 3,13 ). Αυτός ως Θεός δι’ ημάς τους αμαρτωλούς έπαθε τόσα, τι έχομεν να απολογηθώμεν, εάν δεν υπομένωμεν ένα πειρασμόν δια την αγάπην Του, ή έστω και δια τας αμαρτίας μας;
Δια των θλίψεων σώζεται ο άνθρωπος, χωρίς θλίψεις κανείς δεν εσώθη. Ο δρόμος που πηγαίνει εις τον Θεόν είναι στενός και ακανθώδης και όποιος θέλει να τον περιπατήση, στενοχωρείται και ματώνει και ιδρώνει. Αυτόν ας περιπατήσωμεν, δια να πάμε εις την αιώνιον ζωήν.

No matter what happened with your parents, confession forgives and erases everything, my dear brother in the Lord. Recall how much the prodigal son sinned (vid. Lk. 16:19-31 ), and how much he grieved his father with his reckless life. But when he repented, at once his father’s arms opened and the past was wiped out as if it had never happened. So the cure for your sad parents has already occurred, for the change of your life to a spiritual life has rectified everything. Now that they are in the true life, they are informed by God about the change of your lifestyle and your repentance, for them. If, when we sin against our true Father, God, He forgives us no matter what we have done, how much more so will our parents be pleased, there in the true life, where they see things clearly. They know human weakness and how easily youth slips, and they are aware of the great master of evil, the devil, who was the cause for all the troubles. Instead, they will be thankful to you that through you they receive aid from God. Remain fully at peace, my brother. Walk the path of repentance with a peaceful mind, and do not let the past trouble you. “Forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forward to those things which are ahead” (Phil. 3:14 ), we should look to the goal of our salvation. As soon as man says, “I have sinned!” God forgives him immediately and overlooks his sins. How much did blessed Augustine grieve that holy mother of his! Nevertheless, what sanctity and eros of God he attained later! With repentance everything is corrected. There is nothing that overcomes the compassion of God. “He is merciful to the last and provides for the first; to this one He gives, and to that one He shows kindness” (Paschal Homily of St. John Chrysostom ). The love of God covers and corrects everything. No one is sinless except for one-God.

Slander is a great evil. Just as the little rudder steers the whole ship wherever it wants, likewise the tongue leads a person either to good or to evil. The holy fathers greatly censure judging other people’s sins, faults, or evil habits. When we judge our brother, we condemn ourselves to a great sin. But when we cover our brother, God will also protect us from great sins. When we expose our brother, we drive the grace of God away from us and He permits us to fall into the same sins so that we learn that we are all weak and that the grace of God supports us. Whoever guards his tongue guards his soul from great sins and grievous falls. The chief cause of criticism and slander is pride and egotism, because one considers oneself better than the others. For this reason it is very beneficial for a person to think of himself as below everyone, so that he considers his brother than him in order that, with the help of God, he may be delivered from this evil.

Να αγαπάτε ο ένας τον άλλο και να μην πικραίνεσθε λόγω εγωισμού. Η ταπείνωση είναι ασφαλής οδηγός «δεν αφήνει αυτόν που την έχει να προσκρούσει σε υφάλους απροσεξίας και να συντριβεί» αλλά ως οδηγός φωτεινός οδηγεί άπταιστα επί του ασφαλούς.
Ο εγωισμός είναι το κάκιστο των κακών «αυτός μας δημιουργεί όλα τα σφάλματα, με τους ανυπότακτους λογισμούς. Φοβηθείτε τον και προσπαθείτε να απαλλαγείτε απ' αυτόν, καθώς όσο μένει μέσα μας αχτύπητος, τόσο θα μας πληγώνει με ανάλογους πόνους».
«Παρακαλώ μην κατακρίνετε ο ένας τον άλλο, διότι είναι πέρα για πέρα εγωισμός». Ας δικαιολογεί ο αδελφός του αδελφού το σφάλμα, κι αυτό είναι μαρτυρία ταπεινώσεως και αγάπης. Αυτός ο αδελφός που το κάνει αυτό θα βρει πολλή τη χάρη του Θεού «εκείνος όμως που κρίνει και σκανδαλίζει τον πλησίον του, πρέπει να γνωρίζει ότι όχι χάρη δε θα βρει, αλλά και αν κάτι έχει θα το χάσει, για να μάθει το μάθημα της ταπείνωσης διά του παθήματος».
Φοβηθείτε περισσότερο την εσωτερική κατάκριση, αυτή που γίνεται με τους λογισμούς κι αυτό, γιατί δεν έρχεται στο φως με τον προφορικό λόγο, που ενδέχεται να διορθωθεί απ' αυτόν που την ακούει. Προσέξτε, λέω, την ένδοθεν κατάκριση, που ανεπαίσθητα μας ενοχοποιεί θανάσιμα και μας στερεί τη ζωή της θείας χάριτος και μας προσφέρει ως ποτό πικρότατο, την ψυχική νέκρωση.
Πόσα και πόσα δε μας λένε το ιερό Ευαγγέλιο και οι Πατέρες περί κατακρίσεως. Καλύτερα να πέσει από ψηλά, παρά από τη γλώσσα.
Εύχομαι η αγάπη και η ακατακρισία να βασιλεύουν σε όλες τις εκδηλώσεις μεταξύ σας, ώστε το Άγιο Πνεύμα να αναπαύεται στις ψυχές σας.

Ο Ιούδας ο προδότης αφιερώσας εαυτόν τω Κυρίω και μέτοχος χαρίτων γενόμενος, θαύματα συνεπετέλει μετά των λοιπών Αποστόλων και εις το τέλος εναυάγησεν. Ο ληστής έργα ασεβείας, κακοπραγίας, ανήθικα, κ.λ.π. πράξας και φωνήν ελέους κράξας, κατέπαυσεν εις τον αχείμαστον λιμένα της αιωνίου μακαριότητος. Ο λαός των Εβραίων, ο τας επαγγελίας του Θεού δεχθείς και περιούσιος και εκλεκτός και άγιος υπό Θεού κληθείς, τυφλωθείς έχασε τον Θεόν δια παντός. Let us buy precious things that are pleasing to the great King: confession, humility, purity of soul and body from carnal sins, godly love, and keeping ourselves far from criticizing others, idle talk, lying, etc. When we master all this , we shall be wealthy in God`s blessed land.

Δια πολλών θλίψεων θα σωθώμεν, παιδί μου, επί τον ταπεινόν και ησύχιον και τρέμοντα τους λόγους μου;». Αι θλίψεις ελευθερώνουν τον άνθρωπον, που τας υπομένει μετά χαράς και γνώσεως, από τας αμαρτίας του και τον κανόνα αυτών, δημιουργείται και πνευματικός χαρακτήρ, γίνεται ο άνθρωπος ελεήμων, ταπεινός, πράος κ.λ.π.
Εκείνος που δεν έχει αληθινήν γνώσιν των πειρδιότι ποίος άγιος ηγίασε ή άνθρωπος εσώθη, χωρίς να περάση από το καμίνι των διαφόρων πικριών; Αν εδώ πικρανθώμεν, εκεί, εις το άλλον κόσμον, ο Χριστός μας, θα μας γλυκάνη με την τόσον όμορφον βασιλείαν Του.
Όταν σου έρχεται η θλίψις, να παρηγορήσαι ότι και πάλιν θα σου έλθη η χαρά και η γαλήνη. Συνεχώς ενθυμού τον θάνατον, αυτή η μνήμη θα σου δίδη πολύ κουράγιο εις τα λυπηρά του ματαίου τούτου βίου και θα γεμίζη η ψυχή σου παρηγορίαν. Τα βάσανα της ζωής μίαν ημέραν, παιδί μου, θα λήξουν, διότι ο κόσμος παρέρχεται, μόνον ό,τι πράξη κανείς δια την δόλια του ψυχήν, εκείνο αιώνια θα μείνη ή προς ύψος ή προς βάθος και απώλειαν.

The truth is that the illness, afflictions and tribulations of Christians bring about the cleansing of their soul and the forgiveness of their sins.
Every Christian has the sacred obligation to accept with a guileless and simple heart whatever kind of cross God has placed upon him and to carry it up to glorious Golgotha.
Sometimes he may fall to his knees under the toil and burden, but God will send another good Simon of Cyrene that is, the grace of patience, who will lift the cross to Golgotha.
When we visit a cemetery, we see a cross on every grave, some wooden, others stone, others iron, etc. Likewise, God gives a cross to every Christian soul.
To one He gives an iron cross, to another a wooden cross, to another a stone cross. Each person is given one as the wisdom of God deems best.
The main purpose of the Lord is to save our precious soul, regardless of whether or not it suffers in the process. He Himself provides us with the patience and enlightenment to be able to bear the cross to the end.

How precious is the time of this life! Every minute has great worth, for within one minute we can think so many things, either good or evil. One godly thought raises us to heaven, and one diabolical thought lowers us to hell. So then, behold how valuable every minute in this present life is. Unfortunately, though, we do not think about this, and hours, days, and years pass with no profit—but is it merely with no profit? How much damage we have all suffered—and I, first—without realizing it! But some day, when our soul is about to depart from our body, we shall realize it. But, alas, it will be too late; there is no room for correction then. We must realize this now when we can still make a start. We should take advantage of the precious time of our life. Truly blessed is he who compels himself and makes a start, because some day he will become spiritually rich. It is never too late, for the Lord awaits each one of us to awaken so that He may give us work. He waits until the eleventh hour (cf. Mt. 20:6 ). He tries with every means to awaken us. I pray that all of us will awaken, light our lamps, and with a vigilant eye wait patiently for the Lord to come, so that we may enter the resplendent bridal chamber of eternal bliss, the festival of the bright angels, to chant with them the resurrectional canticles, which will elevate us from theoria to theoria and to divine ascents! Then—oh, then!—we shall fully realize what a great work it is to compel ourselves in everything and that our superiors did well to push us and grieve us, for we shall say, “Behold what we see now!” Then our thanks to God will have no limits. Then we shall really render thanks worthily to God!

Την υγείαν σου να την αναθέτης εις τον Θεόν. Εάν κάτι το επιβάλλη η ασθένεια ή ο ιατρός, να το παίρνης με την ελπίδα ότι ο Θεός δι’ αυτών θα συντελέση να γίνη εκείνο, που θέλει Αυτός να γίνη, χωρίς βέβαια η αυταπάρνησις να μας οδηγήση εις την αυτοκτονίαν, ούτε η περιποίησις εις την φιλαυτίαν, αλλά την μέσην οδόν να βαδίσωμεν, δηλαδή να κάμνωμεν το επιβαλλόμενον με πίστιν, δια να μη μας λογισθή αυτοκτονία. Το αν θα γίνω καλά με το μέσον που μεταχειρίσθηκα, αυτό το αφήνω με πίστιν εις τον Θεόν.
Έχε, παιδί μου, υπομονήν εις όλα σου τα παθήματα. Η ασθένεια, όταν την υπομένωμεν, έχει πάρα πολύ το κέρδος εις την ψυχήν, αρκεί να κατηγορής τον εαυτόν σου, διότι κυρίως δια τας αμαρτίας μας υποφέρομεν και κατά το πλείστον δια την υπερηφάνειαν της καρδίας μας.
