We have so much material offered by the devil, the world, and our carelessness to talk about idly, so many events and stories that are taking place and will take place, that we have plenty to occupy ourselves with; while “the one thing needful”, to approach God through prayer, we have laid aside. Our need for this spiritual turning to God is so urgent that nothing else should preoccupy us other than how to be close to God by means of prayer and holy thoughts, which also greatly help us achieve this goal.

Παιδί μου, να είσαι σιωπηλός, ταπεινός, υπήκοος μέχρι θανάτου, να είσαι έτοιμος να θυσιασθής εις το να κόψης το θέλημά σου, έστω και εάν αυτό σου φανή σωστόν μαρτύριον, αυτό σημαίνει αυταπάρνησις. Όταν αυτά τα φυλάξης, μη φοβήσαι τίποτε, κανένα κακόν, ούτε από τους δαίμονας ούτε από τους ανθρώπους, διότι όποιος φυλάσσει τα θεία προστάγματα και ο Θεός φυλάσσει αυτόν από κάθε κακόν. Να μην είσαι απότομος εις τας απαντήσεις σου, εις ό,τι δε σε ελέγχουν λέγε «ευλόγησον».

My children, I beg you, for the love of God, do not stop saying the prayer of our Christ, not even for a moment. Your lips should continuously murmur the name of Jesus Who destroys the devil and all his plots. Cry out incessantly to our Christ, and at once He will hasten wholeheartedly to help us. Just as iron cannot be grabbed or even approached when it is red-hot, the same thing happens with the soul of him who says the prayer with the fervor of Christ. The demons do not approach it—and how could they? For if they draw near it, they will be burned by the divine fire which the divine name contains. Whoever prays is enlightened, and whoever does not pray is darkened. Prayer is the provider of divine light. This is why everyone who prays well becomes all radiant, and the Spirit of God dwells in him. If despondency, indifference, listlessness, etc., approach us, let us pray with fear, pain, and great noetic vigilance, and we will immediately experience the miracle of consolation and joy by the grace of God. It is not possible for a person who prays to hold a grudge against someone or to refuse to forgive him for any fault whatsoever. Everything is reduced to ashes when it comes near the fire of the Jesus prayer. So, my children, struggle in the salvific and sanctifying prayer of our Christ, so that you may become radiant and holy. Pray also for me, the indolent sinner, so that God may be merciful on the multitude of my sins, as well as on my countless liabilities.

αυτόν τον μάταιον κόσμον, παιδί μου, θα θλιβώμεν, θα πικρανθώμεν, θα
πονέσωμεν. Μα όλα είναι δι’ εν χρονικόν διάστημα, είναι προσωρινά, μόνον
εις αιώνιον βαθμόν και μέτρον να μη μας εγκαταλείψη ο Θεός και δεν τα
υπομείνωμεν. Όταν πονάς και θλίβεσαι, τον Εσταυρωμένον να μνημονεύης και
τότε θα ευρίσκης πολλήν ανακούφισιν. Διότι ποίος ατενίζων εις τον
Σταυρωθέντα και αναλογιζόμενος τα πάθη Του, άτινα υπέρ ημών έπαθε, δεν
θα εύρη βάλσαμον εις τας πληγάς του, είτε ψυχικάς είτε σωματικάς; Βλέπε
και συ, τέκνον, άνω, εκεί εις τον Γολγοθάν, εκεί όπου έδωσε την
τροπαιοφόρον νίκην το άγιον Αρνίον, ίνα δια του Αίματός Του πλύνη τα
έλκη των αμαρτιών και των παθών μας.
Η ευσπλαχνία Του είναι μεγάλη, ποτέ μη χάσης το θάρρος σου εις Εκείνον, που δια σε εσταυρώθη.
Εύχομαι την Μεγάλην Τεσσαρακοστήν να την διέλθης με λίαν ακμάζουσαν ψυχικήν και σωματικήν υγείαν. Αμήν.

The devil greatly rejoices when he manages to persuade a person to hide diabolical thoughts.
This is because he will achieve his premeditated, soul-destroying goal.

Ας μετανοήσωμεν ειλικρινά, ας εξομολογηθώμεν καθαρά και λεπτομερώς. Ας μας απασχολή συνεχώς το κριτήριον του Θεού και η απόφασις Τούτου και να λέγωμεν: « Άράγε θα σωθώμεν ή θα αντικρύσωμεν τα βασανιστήρια των κολάσεων;» Τώρα πρέπει, και μάλλον συνεχώς να χύνωμεν δάκρυα μετανοίας. Αχ, πόσον πρέπει να μας απασχολή το πώς και κατά πόσον το ένδυμα της ψυχής μας είναι λευκόν και καθαρόν! Πρέπει να το λευκάνωμεν διαφορετικά δεν δυνάμεθα να παρουσιασθώμεν εμπρός εις τον Χριστόν μας καθώς είμεθα.
Η μελέτη του θανάτου δεν πρέπει να μας διαφεύγη καθόλου από το ωράριον της μοναχικής ζωής.

Glory to the only wise God, Who knows how to extract the sweet out of the bitter and thus enrich our knowledge out of His boundless love toward us. He scourges us with afflictions and trials, so that He can draw us near Him; for He knows that through the sorrowful things of this present life, man remains near Him and is saved.
The comfortable life is very hazardous for eternal salvation. It is not the Spirit of God that dwells in those living in comfort, but rather the spirit of the devil, according to the saying of the Fathers. For this reason, in this life’s sorrows we need to have patient and thanksgiving, for God is well pleased with both of these virtues. May the Lord give us much patience in our life’s sorrows, so that in everything we may thank the Giver of good things Who provides for us.

Δια πολλών θλίψεων θα σωθώμεν, παιδί μου, επί τον ταπεινόν και ησύχιον και τρέμοντα τους λόγους μου;». Αι θλίψεις ελευθερώνουν τον άνθρωπον, που τας υπομένει μετά χαράς και γνώσεως, από τας αμαρτίας του και τον κανόνα αυτών, δημιουργείται και πνευματικός χαρακτήρ, γίνεται ο άνθρωπος ελεήμων, ταπεινός, πράος κ.λ.π.
Εκείνος που δεν έχει αληθινήν γνώσιν των πειρδιότι ποίος άγιος ηγίασε ή άνθρωπος εσώθη, χωρίς να περάση από το καμίνι των διαφόρων πικριών; Αν εδώ πικρανθώμεν, εκεί, εις το άλλον κόσμον, ο Χριστός μας, θα μας γλυκάνη με την τόσον όμορφον βασιλείαν Του.
Όταν σου έρχεται η θλίψις, να παρηγορήσαι ότι και πάλιν θα σου έλθη η χαρά και η γαλήνη. Συνεχώς ενθυμού τον θάνατον, αυτή η μνήμη θα σου δίδη πολύ κουράγιο εις τα λυπηρά του ματαίου τούτου βίου και θα γεμίζη η ψυχή σου παρηγορίαν. Τα βάσανα της ζωής μίαν ημέραν, παιδί μου, θα λήξουν, διότι ο κόσμος παρέρχεται, μόνον ό,τι πράξη κανείς δια την δόλια του ψυχήν, εκείνο αιώνια θα μείνη ή προς ύψος ή προς βάθος και απώλειαν.
