Δόξα τω μόνω σοφώ Θεώ, όπου γνωρίζει από το πικρόν να εξάγη γλυκύ και ούτω να πλουτίζη τας γνώσεις μας εκ της περί ημάς απεράντου αγάπης Του. Μας μαστίζει δια των θλίψεων και των πειρασμών, ίνα δυνηθή να μας ελκύση κοντά Του, διότι γνωρίζει ότι δια των θλιβερών της παρούσης ζωής ο άνθρωπος παραμένει κοντά Του και σώζεται.
Η άνετος ζωή λίαν επικίνδυνος δια την αιώνιον σωτηρίαν και εις τους εν ανέσει ζώντας ου το του Θεού Πνεύμα κατοικεί, αλλά το του διαβόλου, κατά την έκφρασιν των πατέρων.
Δια τούτο εις τα θλιβερά της ζωής αυτής χρειαζόμεθα να έχωμεν υπομονήν και ευχαριστίαν, διότι λίαν ευχαριστείται ο Θεός εις αμφοτέρας τας αρετάς ταύτας. Είθε ο Κύριος να μας δώση πολλήν υπομονήν εις τα θλιβερά της ζωής μας, δια να ευχαριστώμεν εις όλα τον αγαθοδότην Προνοητήν μας.

Are you able to enumerate the mercies of God? The sins of the worst person, before the compassion of God, are like a handful of sand in the ocean. There is no sin which overcomes the compassion of God. God may be portrayed as our mother: is it possible for the sin of a child to overcome his mother’s love? If a mother loves her child so much, how infinitely does God love us, Who clearly proved this by being crucified on the Cross? The Apostle Peter denied the Lord three times, yet through repentance he was restored. The great persecutor of Christians, the Apostle Paul, through repentance became the chief of the Apostles. Prostitutes, thieves, tax collectors, and innumerable other guilty people were sanctified by repentance. For this reason, cast away your distress and excessive remorse; be hopeful; take courage, and drive away every thought of despair.

Η αμαρτία ως κέντρον, βαμμένη με την αρμόζουσαν ηδονήν, έρχεται ύπουλα, ως γλυκεία και χαριτωμένη μέχρι γλώσσης, δια να προσβάλη την ψυχήν. Όμως ο δελεασθείς από την ολιγόστιγμον ηδονήν και ανάπαυσιν αυτής, πικροτέραν δηλητηρίου και καταστρεπτικωτέραν λοιμικής νόσου θα την αισθανθή επί του πνευματικού οργανισμού του.

Whoever puts into practice everything his spiritual father advises has his blessing; whoever does not do what he is advised does not have the blessing of his Elder here or in the other world. Whoever disregards whatever he is commanded, whoever does not regard as law the things which he is advised and does not strive to apply them out of disdain, must realize that damnation will befall him! My child, fear the righteous Judge and be obedient to your spiritual father’s advice, for your Elder desires the salvation of your soul, whereas the devil desires to make you his own through egotism and disobedience.

Η μετάνοια είναι ατέλεστος, όλαι αι αρεταί δύνανται με την χάριν του Θεού, να τελειοποιηθούν από τον άνθρωπον. Την μετάνοιαν ουδείς δύναται να την τελειοποιήση, διότι μέχρι και της τελευταίας ημών αναπνοής έχομεν ανάγκην της μετανοίας, διότι σφάλλομεν εν ριπή οφθαλμού, οπότε η μετάνοια είναι ακατάκτητος.
Ω, πόσον αγαθός ο Θεός! Δικαίως λοιπόν θα κολασθούν οι συναμαρτωλοί μου, διότι παρεγνώρισαν την άπειρον ευσπλαγχνίαν του ουρανίου Πατρός. Ενώ λοιπόν ως άνθρωποι σφάλλομεν, μας έρχεται οκνηρόν το να είπωμεν το « ήμαρτον »! Και πως θα το είπωμεν, εφ’ όσον έχομεν, εγώ πρώτος, την λήθην και την ραθυμίαν με συμβοηθόν την υπερηφάνειαν, ισχυρά εμπόδια προς τον δρόμον της ταπεινώσεως! Μας τον έδειξεν ο Χριστός δια του Σταυρού Του, αλλά δυστυχώς θεληματικώς κωφεύομεν προς μεγίστην μεταμέλειάν μας.
Ο χρόνος φεύγει, τα έτη κυλούν και όλο και πλησιάζομεν δια την αιωνιότητα. Το βλέπομεν, ενώ μία νάρκη διανοητική μας δεσμεύει, έως να βληθώμεν, εγώ πρώτος, εις την κόλασιν! Ο Θεός μου, ο λυτρωσάμενος το ανθρώπινον γένος εκ της δουλείας του εχθρού, ρύσαι και ημάς από την μέλλουσαν καταδίκην, όταν θα έλθης να κρίνης τον κόσμον, αποδίδων εκάστω κατά τα έργα αυτού. Είθε δι’ ευχών σου να εύρω έλεος, όταν κρίνεται η ελεεινή μου ψυχή, διότι δειλιώ απαντήσαι τω φοβερώ Κριτή ελεγχόμενος υπό του ιδίου μου συνειδότος.

Man’s life is a martyrdom. Ever since we fell from true happiness we gather the fruit of disobedience: “Thorns and thistles will the earth bring forth to you” (Gen. 3:18 ) –the earth of the heart will, too. How will we know that we are exiles, if not through afflictions and torments? There is no person who does not have something that afflicts him. Pious Christians are afflicted, too, but in the depths of their souls they also have the hope that one day the many afflictions will result in blessed repose for them. Without afflictions and sufferings let no one expect repose in the life beyond the grave. That life is for those who have labored and were heavy-laden by the weight of this present life. Of course, the saints had much grace and spiritual strength, and they rejoiced in suffering. But we, and I first of all, suffer and sometimes our patience breaks. But glory be to God, Who enlightens us to repent and correct ourselves. “The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” (Mt. 26:41 ).

Εδώ εις αυτόν τον μάταιον κόσμον, παιδί μου, θα θλιβώμεν, θα πικρανθώμεν, θα πονέσωμεν. Μα όλα είναι δι’ εν χρονικόν διάστημα, είναι προσωρινά, μόνον εις αιώνιον βαθμόν και μέτρον να μη μας εγκαταλείψη ο Θεός και δεν τα υπομείνωμεν. Όταν πονάς και θλίβεσαι, τον Εσταυρωμένον να μνημονεύης και τότε θα ευρίσκης πολλήν ανακούφισιν. Διότι ποίος ατενίζων εις τον Σταυρωθέντα και αναλογιζόμενος τα πάθη Του, άτινα υπέρ ημών έπαθε, δεν θα εύρη βάλσαμον εις τας πληγάς του, είτε ψυχικάς είτε σωματικάς; Βλέπε και συ, τέκνον, άνω, εκεί εις τον Γολγοθάν, εκεί όπου έδωσε την τροπαιοφόρον νίκην το άγιον Αρνίον, ίνα δια του Αίματός Του πλύνη τα έλκη των αμαρτιών και των παθών μας.
Η ευσπλαχνία Του είναι μεγάλη, ποτέ μη χάσης το θάρρος σου εις Εκείνον, που δια σε εσταυρώθη.
Εύχομαι την Μεγάλην Τεσσαρακοστήν να την διέλθης με λίαν ακμάζουσαν ψυχικήν και σωματικήν υγείαν. Αμήν

Man comes into the light of this world crying, he passes his life in weeping and sorrows, and he leaves the world in tears and pain. O vanity of vanities! The dream vanishes, and man awakens into the reality of the true life. No one notices how this vain life flows by—the years pass, the months roll by, the hours disappear, the moments slip by imperceptibly, and then without any warning, the telegram comes: “Put your house in order, for you will die; you will live no longer!” (Is. 38:1 ). Then the deception is uncovered, and a person dying realizes what an important role the world played for him. He feels regret and distress; he yearns for the time that is gone; he would give all his wealth to buy one day in order to repent and receive communion. Unfortunately, though, not one favor is given to him. Previously, time was at his disposal for years; he, however, wasted it in business, in bars, in cinemas, and in every shameful desire. Wise is the merchant who realized the deceit of this temporal life, became wise, and sent his merchandise to heaven before the fair of life ended, in order to find it there in the treasuries of the heavenly city of God with accrued interest and dividends. Blessed is that wise man, for he will live the painless and blessed life unto the ages of ages, while the unwise, the drunkards, the greedy, the lovers of money, the lewd, the murderers, and the rest of my fellow-sinners—of whom I am the first—will be thrown into the furnace of unquenchable fire! Now that the sun is shining and the day casts its sweet light upon us, let us walk quickly along the road of our correction, before the night of the future afterlife overtakes us, at which time we shall no longer be able to walk. “Behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation” (2 Cor. 6:2 ), cries the Apostle Paul in his immortal words.

Ο μεγαλύτερος πλούτος είναι να προσπαθήση να διατηρήση τη συνείδησί του ο άνθρωπος χωρίς βάρος. Σε περίπτωσι δε που θα αισθανθή κάτι να τον έχη πληγώσει, να το διορθώση αμέσως και έτσι επανέρχεται πάλι στην ίδια κατάστασι. Πόσες και πόσες φορές δεν μας έχει ελέγξει η συνείδησί μας; Όσο περισσότερο ο άνθρωπος προσέχει τη συνείδησί του, όσο περισσότερο την επιμελείται, τόσο λεπτότερα τον οδηγεί.
Όσο δε λεπτότερα τον οδηγεί και τον ελέγχει, τόσον περισσότερο ανεβαίνει στην καθαρότητα. Υπάρχει και η πονηρά λεγομένη συνείδησι, η οποία έρχεται και αυτή πολλές φορές με το πρόσχημα και με το σχήμα και με τη μορφή της αγαθής συνειδήσεως, και όμως στην ουσία είναι η πονηρά συνείδησι, η διεστραμμένη, η εναντίον του Θεού συνείδησι. Η πονηρά συνείδησι είναι εκείνη η φωνή, η οποία διδάσκει αντίθετα, κυρίως πλανεμένα και διεστραμμένα. Η αγαθή συνείδησι έχει σαν αφετηρία και σαν αρχή και σαν θεμέλιο την ταπεινοφροσύνη και την υπακοή. Η πονηρά συνείδησι έχει ως αρχήν της την υπερηφάνεια και την ανυπακοή.
Όταν δεν πείθεται κανείς στον Γέροντα, όταν αντιστέκεται, όταν άλλα του λέγουν και άλλα λέγει, όταν δεν ακούη, τότε έχει την λεγομένην αυτοπεποίθησι. Η τοιαύτη αυτοπεποίθησι είναι πονηρά συνείδησι.

Take a look at death, my child, which reaps everyone. All human things melt and burn out like a candle. Only godly works—that is, whatever works were done for the love of God—will never burn out, but will shine for a person so that he may ascend the path to reach the throne of God. Work the deeds of salvation, even if it takes great effort. Everything will be counted as a struggle, as ascesis, and as resistance to the devil, and your due reward will be definitely given to you. Compel yourself. Bear in mind your departure, your death, the toll-houses, and the fearsome judgment of God. Think about hell and the damned, my child. Count yourself as one of them also, and then all your sorrows will seem like nothing to you, and a sweet consolation will come upon your entire soul.
