Ο Θεός της υπομονής και της παρακλήσεως να σου δώση υπομονήν και θωπείαν παρηγορίας προς τόνωσιν και συνέχισιν του αγώνος. Μη βλέπης, παιδί μου, μόνον τα παρόντα αλγεινά, αλλά «ύψωσον τους οφθαλμούς σου, ως το απογεγαλακτισμένον επί την μητέρα αυτού» και ίδε: «Ουκ άξια τα παθήματα του νυν καιρού προς την μέλλουσαν δόξαν αποκαλυφθήναι ημίν» ( Ρωμ. 8,18 ), τοις ποθούσιν την επιφάνειαν του Χριστού μας. Μη μετράς μόνον τους πόνους, αλλά φιλοσόφησε και την αντιμισθίαν, διότι ουχί δίκαιος ο Θεός; Ο Θεός, σου υστέρησε την ανακούφισιν την εκ της υγείας των ποδών σου, ουχί ίνα σε αξιώση «αγαλλομένω ποδί» να εορτάσης εκεί, εις την άνω Ιερουσαλήμ, την μεγίστην ανάστασιν της ψυχής σου; Ναι, αληθώς, περί τούτου βοά άπασα η Γραφή. Βάδιζε, παιδί μου, εν Χριστώ, κατέναντι της αιωνίου δόξης. Μην αποκάμης πυκτεύων, μη νομίσης ότι αέρα δέρεις, αλλά όντως πάλη γίνεται, καθώς και επί Ιώβ. Εκείνος υπέμεινε μαρτύριον από τους ποικίλους πόνους και η γυνή του τον ωθούσε προς τον αιώνιον θάνατον δια της κακής συμβουλής, σε δε νουθετούν την αιώνιον ζωήν να τύχης. Εκείνος έκειτο εις κοπρίαν με έλκη, περιγέλασμα αμαρτίας εν τοις ανθρώποις, συ δε εις οίκον και κλίνην αναπαύεσαι και ως ενάρετος χριστιανός λογίζεσαι. Βλέπεις πόσον υστερούμεν; Δια τούτο υπόμεινον και ευχαρίστει τον Θεόν, που σου έδωσε τέτοιο δώρον, ίνα, ως ευγνώμονα δούλον, σε καταστήση κληρονόμον της απεράντου Αυτού βασιλείας! Αμήν, γένοιτο.

My blessed child in Christ, I am praying that the great Physician of souls and bodies grant you your full health, in accordance with His holy will. There were holy men, my child, who were gravely ill, yet in their illness they healed others. Oh, how much God loved them! An exceptional sign of God’s love for a soul is when He saddles it with illnesses or afflictions. Pain of body or soul purifies, cleanses, and brightens the garment of the soul from every stain of sin. There was one holy monastic father who was always ill. It happened once that he was not ill for a period of time, and he complained, saying: “Ah, my God, why didst Thou forget me and not consider me worthy of Thy visitation?” This blessed man yearned for illnesses because he knew from his experience how much the soul benefits from them. Pain brings the unrepentant sinner to repentance, whereas for the righteous, it fortifies the strength of his soul and becomes a mighty wall around him so that he does not stray into sin. Just as a sick person gladly submits himself to the painful treatment of the doctor because he knows his aim, similarly we should endure with gratitude and knowledge all things that befall us involuntarily as sent from the kind hand of God for our salvation. “The athlete is tested by the stadium, the captain by the storm and tempest, the general by the battle, the magnanimous by misfortune, and the Christian by temptation,” says St. Basil the Great. Just as the earth becomes productive when the plow tills it deeply, likewise the soul becomes fruitful in virtues when pain and illness visit it frequently and intensely! The more pain and affliction a person has, the more beautiful his crown becomes. And if there are many and various pains that oppress him, then the crown of glory is adorned with many flowers and pearls. Gold has to pass through the furnace to become purified, and the soul of a Christian has to pass through the furnace of temptations to receive the seal of eternal glory in the royal treasury of Christ the King. If holy and blessed people passed through the furnace of pain and were benefited, how much more pain suits us and how much benefit we will derive from it when we endure it with knowledge and gratitude! It is when we see pain oppressing us, physically or spiritually, that we should consider that we are loved by God and that He has placed us in the ranks of His chosen. O blessed chastening of the Lord, I love you. But I am unworthy of such a gift, for I live in comfort and shall become a victim of the eternal fire. So, my child, I envy you because you are suffering and will obtain eternal repose! Your crown is decorated and beautified for your eternal glory! Endure for the Lord’s sake until the end. Bear your cross well lest you drop it, and you can be sure that you will be glorified with Christ eternally! Pray for me, too, lest I be shut out of paradise as one who does not practice what he preaches.

Μη φοβού, μηδέ δειλιάτω η καρδία σου, ο Χριστός μας αοράτως σε βοηθεί κρυφία χειρί, σε δοκιμάζει δια να σου δώση την χάριν Του.
Όσον γεωργείται η γη της καρδίας και όσον πιο βαθειά ο γεωργός βάζει το αλέτρι, τόσον περισσότερον καρπόν θα δώση το χωράφι εις τον καιρόν του. Ούτω κάνει και ο μέγας γεωργός, ο Θεός, την ψυχήν μας. Μας αφήνει να έρχονται πειρασμοί και θλίψεις και πόνος και στενοχωρία, να εισέρχωνται βαθειά εις την καρδίαν και πολλάκις να ευρισκώμεθα εις αδιέξοδον, το πώς θα τα καταφέρωμεν με αυτόν ή εκείνον τον πειρασμόν, και πάσχει και οδυνάται ο άνθρωπος, αλλά εις τους αγαπώντας τον Θεόν, συνεργεί ο Θεός να γίνωνται εις αγαθήν έκβασιν.

Man’s life is a martyrdom. Ever since we fell from true happiness we gather the fruit of disobedience: “Thorns and thistles will the earth bring forth to you” (Gen. 3:18 ) –the earth of the heart will, too. How will we know that we are exiles, if not through afflictions and torments? There is no person who does not have something that afflicts him. Pious Christians are afflicted, too, but in the depths of their souls they also have the hope that one day the many afflictions will result in blessed repose for them. Without afflictions and sufferings let no one expect repose in the life beyond the grave. That life is for those who have labored and were heavy-laden by the weight of this present life. Of course, the saints had much grace and spiritual strength, and they rejoiced in suffering. But we, and I first of all, suffer and sometimes our patience breaks. But glory be to God, Who enlightens us to repent and correct ourselves. “The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” (Mt. 26:41 ).

The goal of noetic prayer is to unite God with man, to bring Christ into man’s heart, banishing the devil from there and destroying all the work that he has accomplished there through sin. For, as the beloved disciple says, “For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil” (1 Jn. 3:8 ). Only the devil knows the inexpressible power of these seven words of the Jesus prayer, and this is why he wars and fights against the prayer with furious rage. Countless times the demons have confessed through the mouths of possessed people that they are burned by the action of the prayer.

Προσέχετε να είσθε ειλικρινείς εις τας πράξεις σας, καθώς και εις τους λόγους, ιδίως εις τας εξαγορεύσεις σας, διότι ο Θεός ετάζει καρδίας και νεφρούς και τίποτε δεν είναι σκοτεινόν εις την διόρασιν του ακοιμήτου Αυτού Οφθαλμού.
Φοβηθήτε τον Θεόν, ο Θεός δεν μυκτηρίζεται, δεν ξεγελιέται. Παιδεύει αυστηρά, όταν δεν ίδη ειλικρίνειαν. Δια τούτο προσέχετε. Όπως πράττετε την παρακοήν, την κρυφήν αμαρτίαν, έτσι και να την θεατρίζετε εις την εξομολόγησιν, μη σας νικά ο εγωϊσμός και σκεπάζετε την αλήθειαν και μένετε αδιόρθωτοι και εμπαθείς.
Προσέχετε, τα χρόνια περνούν, κυλούν και ο θάνατος έρχεται εις ώραν, που ημείς δεν περιμένομεν, και ούτω ανέτοιμοι φεύγομεν, με κατακεκριμμένην την συνείδησιν, η οποία θα μας κατηγορήση εις το φοβερόν κριτήριον του Θεού.
Διορθώσατε τα πάντα, εάν θέλετε να ίδητε ημέρας αγαθάς, απαθείας και ειρήνης.

Αγωνίζου, παιδί μου, όπως φέρης καρπούς εις την ψυχήν σου, διότι αναλόγως των κόπων του έκαστος θα λάβη και θέσιν κοντά εις τον Κύριον Ιησούν.
Μη φοβού, θα διέλθωμεν δια πυρός και ύδατος, δηλαδή δια πυρός μεν, όταν οι πειρασμοί, μας φαίνωνται ωσάν φωτιά εις την ενέργειάν των, ως οι αισχροί λογισμοί, του μίσους, του φθόνου κ.λ.π., δι’ ύδατος δε, όταν μας έρχωνται οι λογισμοί απογνώσεως και απελπισίας, που βυθίζουν την ψυχήν ως εις ύδατα.
Μετά την διέλευσιν του πυρός και του ύδατος θα μας αναβιβάση εις την πνευματικήν αναψυχήν της απαλλαγής εκ των χαμαιζήλων λογισμών και εις την χαριζομένην εκ της χάριτος απάθειαν.

In the war of the flesh, only turning our back saves us , that is, we must flee from fantasies and thoughts as soon as they appear. Do not linger at all in order to examine or to converse with fantasies! The imagination is a great and terrible snare; things avoided by the eyes and the touch are approached with the greatest of ease by the imagination.
Strive to keep your mind from imagining any worldly thing outside of your monastery. Only one thought should replace them all , the remembrance of the adored Jesus. If something in your cell reminds you of someone, you must necessarily get rid of it, to avert by all means any occasion for war. Make an effort to erase your past. When it rouses itself and tries to choke you, call on Jesus and He will be ready to help you.
