Ό,τι και αν συνέβη με τους γονείς σου, η εξομολόγησις τα πάντα συγχωρεί και εξαλείφει, αδελφέ εν Κυρίω. Ενθυμού τον άσωτον υιόν, πόσον ημάρτησεν και με τον άσωτον βίον πόσον τους ελύπησε. Όταν όμως μετενόησε, ευθύς αι πατρικαί αγκάλαι ηνοίχθησαν και το παρελθόν εξεμηδενίσθη, ωσάν να μη συνέβη ποτέ. Η θεραπεία λοιπόν των λυπημένων γονέων σου έγινε, διότι η αλλαγή της ζωής σου προς πνευματικήν ζωήν το παν διώρθωσε. Ευρισκόμενοι τώρα εις την αληθινήν ζωήν, είναι πληροφορημένοι δια μέσου του Θεού, δια την αλλαγήν της ζωής σου και της μετανοίας σου, δια τας ελεημοσύνας σου και δια τα μνημόσυνα που τους κάνεις. Αν εμείς αμαρτάνοντες εις τον αληθή Πατέρα μας, τον Θεόν, μας συγχωρεί ό,τι και αν επράξαμεν, πόσον μάλλον οι γονείς μας θα είναι αναπαυμένοι, ευρισκόμενοι εκεί εις την αληθινήν ζωήν, από όπου βλέπουν καθαρώς τα πράγματα και γνωρίζουν την ανθρωπίνην ασθένειαν και το ευόλισθον της νεότητος και τον μέγαν τεχνίτην της πονηρίας, τον διάβολον, που αυτός ήτο η αιτία όλων των σκανδάλων κ.λ.π. Μάλλον θα σου αναγνωρίζουν ευχαριστίας, που λαμβάνουν δια μέσου σου βοήθειαν παρά του Θεού. Μείνε, αδελφέ μου, τελείως ήσυχος. Βάδιζε με ήσυχον νουν τον δρόμον της μετανοίας και μη σε θλίβη το παρελθόν. « Τοις όπισθεν επιλανθανόμενοι, τοις έμπροσθεν επεκτεινόμενοι», επί τον σκοπόν της σωτηρίας να αποβλέπωμεν. Μη κάμπτεται η ισχύς σου δια των τοιούτων λογισμών. Έχε θάρρος, ελπίδα, ανδρείαν. Όλα αυτά που σου φέρει είναι τέχνη του διαβόλου, δια να σου ψυχράνη την ελπίδα της σωτηρίας. « Ημάρτηκα», είπεν ο άνθρωπος; Ευθύς ο Θεός συγχωρεί, παραβλέπει ο Κύριος το αμάρτημά σου. Ο Άγιος Αυγουστίνος πόσον ελύπησε την αγίαν εκείνην μητέρα του! Και όμως κατόπιν εις ποίαν αγιότητα και έρωτα Θεού έφθασε! Με την μετάνοιαν όλα διορθώνονται. Ουδέν υπάρχει, το οποίον να νικά την ευσπλαγχνίαν του Θεού. « Και τον πρώτον ελεεί και τον έσχατον θεραπεύει, κακείνω δίδωσι και τούτω χαρίζεται». Όλα η αγάπη του Θεού τα σκεπάζει και τα διορθώνει. Ουδείς αναμάρτητος, ειμή εις, ο Θεός.

Πρόσεχε το μυαλό να μη σου φεύγη εδώ και εκεί, αλλά κόλλησέ το σφικτά εις το όνομα του Χριστού, και ωσάν να είναι έμπροσθέν σου, να Τον ικετεύης επικαλούμενος το όνομά Του με πόνον ψυχής και τότε θα ίδης πόσην ωφέλειαν θα βγάλης. Τους κακούς λογισμούς έξω γρήγορα με τις «κλωτσιές» να τους διώκης, «έξω, αλήτες», να φωνάζης, «από τον ναόν του Θεού, από την ψυχήν μου»! Δίωκε τους κακούς λογισμούς αμέσως, μόλις έλθουν, μη τους αφήνης μέσα σου, διότι κινδυνεύεις να υποστής πληγήν και ύστερα χρειάζονται δάκρυα και στεναγμοί. Κάμνε υπομονήν, παιδί μου, φεύγε ως από φωτιά τους λογισμούς, διότι αυτοί ερημώνουν την ψυχήν, την ψυχραίνουν, την νεκρώνουν! Εάν όμως τους διώκωμεν με την οργήν, με την προσοχήν και την ευχήν, γίνονται πρόξενοι μεγάλης ωφελείας. Δια τούτο αγωνίζου, μη φοβού, επικαλού τον έτοιμον ιατρόν μας, δεν χρειάζονται πολλαί παρακλήσεις, δεν ζητεί χρήματα δεν συχαίνεται πληγάς, δέχεται τα δάκρυα, ως καλός Σαμαρείτης, περιθάλπει και επιμελείται τον τραυματισμένον από τους νοητούς ληστας. Ας σπεύσωμεν λοιπόν εις Αυτόν.

We have so much material offered by the devil, the world, and our carelessness to talk about idly, so many events and stories that are taking place and will take place, that we have plenty to occupy ourselves with; while “the one thing needful”, to approach God through prayer, we have laid aside. Our need for this spiritual turning to God is so urgent that nothing else should preoccupy us other than how to be close to God by means of prayer and holy thoughts, which also greatly help us achieve this goal.

Πρόσεχε, παιδί μου, ας μη περνά ο καιρός άκαρπος χωρίς καλυτέρευσιν της ψυχής σου, διότι ο θάνατος έρχεται ως κλέπτης, αλλοίμονον, και θα μας εύρη εις μίαν τοιαύτην κατάστασιν ραθυμίας και αδρανείας. Τότε θα είμεθα να μας κλαίουν τα όρη και τα βουνά, τότε θα ευρεθώμεν κενοί καλών έργων, ώστε να μας ποιμάνη ο Άδης αιώνια!
 
Διατί, παιδί μου, να πάθωμεν τέτοιο αξιοθρήνητον ναυάγιον; Ενώ δυνάμεθα, Θεού βοηθεία, να το διαφύγωμεν και να διασωθώμεν εις τον σωτήριον λιμένα της βασιλείας του Θεού! Γνωρίζω ότι έχομεν να παλέψωμεν με φοβερούς εχθρούς και ο κόπος είναι μεγάλος, πλην κοντά εις τον Θεόν, δηλαδή εις την δύναμιν του Θεού, όλα υποχωρούν, όταν αύτη εύρη και την προαίρεσιν και την βίαν του ανθρώπου συνεργούσαν.

Μεγάλον κακόν η καταλαλιά, όπως ακριβώς το μικρόν τιμόνι του καραβιού οδηγεί όπου θέλει το καράβι, έτσι και η γλώσσα οδηγεί τον άνθρωπον είτε εις το καλόν είτε εις το κακόν. ( Γέροντας Εφραίμ Φιλοθεΐτης )

Οι άγιοι πατέρες το κρίνειν τα ξένα αμαρτήματα ή ελαττώματα ή τας κακάς συνηθείας πολύ το ελέγχουν. Όταν κρίνωμεν τον αδελφόν μας, κατακρίνομεν τον εαυτόν μας εις μεγάλο αμάρτημα. Όταν λοιπόν σκεπάζωμε τον αδελφό μας, θα μας σκεπάση και ημάς ο Θεός από μεγάλα αμαρτήματα. Όταν ξεσκεπάζωμε τον αδελφόν μας, διώκομεν από επάνω μας την χάριν του Θεού και παραχωρούμεθα να πέσωμεν εις τα ίδια και ημείς, δια να μάθωμεν ότι όλοι μας, είμεθα αδύνατοι και ότι η χάρις του Θεού μας βαστάζει. 

Όποιος φυλάττει την γλώσσαν του, εκείνος φυλάττει την ψυχήν του από μεγάλα αμαρτήματα και πτώσεις. Το κύριον αίτιον της κατακρίσεως και καταλαλιάς είναι η υπερηφάνεια και ο εγωϊσμός, διότι έχει ο άνθρωπος καλύτερον τον εαυτόν του. Δια τούτο ωφέλιμον πολύ είναι κανείς να λογίζεται τον εαυτόν του μικρότερον από όλους, ώστε να θεωρή τον αδελφόν καλύτερον, δια να ημπορέση με την βοήθειαν του Θεού, να λυτρωθή από αυτό το κακόν.

Whoever has his soul’s eyes open and sees God is not easily harmed by the enemies.

It is not so easy for the demons to harm a person who keeps the constant remembrance of God in his soul. They can tempt him, but it is difficult for them to harm him. This is because he does not permit them to trip him up, for he is armed with the weapon of the constant remembrance of God. Whoever has his soul’s eyes open and sees God is not easily harmed by the enemies. The very spiritual men of old did not need spiritual books. They did not have such a great need to read many patristic books, because they constantly meditated upon things about God. Whatever they saw immediately gave them an opportunity to meditate upon something, to discover something unknown. All of creation was a university for them. Wherever they turned their eyes, they saw something to meditate upon—sometimes the providence of God, other times His wisdom; sometimes His judgment, other times His teachings, and so on. With the eyes of their soul they saw invisible things. Meditating upon them filled their hearts with spiritual knowledge. 

We people of today—since we do not have the eyes of our soul open—do not have the ability to remain in the spiritual meditation. Even when we do see something, we need religious books to know something about God. The minds of these spiritual men were so strong that they could conceive thoughts and ideas with deep wisdom. Our minds are so weak that they can barely retain anything. The Fathers then were, for the most part, simple people; yet, they acquired full knowledge, because the Holy Spirit helped them understand the Scriptures.

The remembrance of God is an all-powerful weapon, a mighty suit of armor against Satan and the various sins. When the mind ceases to remember God and meditate upon divine things, man is overcome by negligence, indolence, forgetfulness, and then by evil desires!
If you see your mind rushing towards the world, know that your soul lacks divine consolation, which is why it turns to the world for consolation. 

When a person’s soul is warm towards God, he is enlightened and feels compunction, and it is impossible for his mind to incline towards the world at the same time. The soul inclines towards the world when it is not united, in a sense, with God. The mind is an area, a place. If God does not occupy it, then the enemy will occupy it. This place cannot remain empty, having neither God nor evil, sin, temptation, or the activity of Satan. The mind is like a mill that is turning. Whatever is thrown into the funnel, which leads to the nillstones below, will come out as flour of that type. If you throw wheat in, you will get wheat flour. If you throw thorns in, you will get thorn flour—a harmful substance. The mill is always turning; the mind of man is always working—like a mill. Do you want to have good results? Put good material into the mill. Do you want to find compunction, tears, joy, peace, etc.? Put good thoughts into the mill of your mind—for example, thoughts about the soul, about the Judgment, the remembrance of death, and so on—and then you will get corresponding spiritual results! But if a person puts sinful thoughts into the mill of his mind, he will definitely have sin as a result. The material that will be given to the mind depends on the intentions of man. And these intentions will be either commended or censured. We should always strive to have salvific thoughts and beneficial images in our mind, so that we do not leave room for Satan to throw in his garbage—sinful thoughts and fantasies!

This prayer becomes everything for him who possesses it. Without it, the emptiness of the soul cannot be satisfied. Do you want to love Christ? Long for the prayer and embrace humility, and then you will realize that the kingdom of God is within us. Do not let evil thoughts rule over you; drive them out immediately with the prayer. Oh, this prayer—what miracles it performs! Cry out the prayer, and your guardian angel will send you spiritual fragrance! The angels greatly rejoice when a person prays with the prayer of our sweetest Jesus. May Jesus be the delight of your soul.
