Πρόσεχε την συνείδησίν σου, τα έργα σου να είναι γνήσια. Όχι άλλο εις το στόμα και άλλο εις την καρδίαν σου. Αγάπησε την αλήθειαν, φοβήσου τον έλεγχον της συνειδήσεώς σου, διόρθωνε τον εσωτερικόν σου άνθρωπον, δια να μη μετανοήσης εις το ύστερον ματαίως. Αυτά, και ο Θεός να είναι μαζί σου και η χάρις του Αγίου Πνεύματος να σε ενδυναμώνη προς εφαρμογήν των νουθεσιών.

Be attentive, my child, that you not judge any soul. For God permits the one who judges his neighbor to fall, so that he learns to have sympathy for his weak brother. The mercy of God supports all of us, but if we become proud, God will remove His grace and we shall become worse than the others. It is one thing to condemn someone and another to be fought by thoughts of condemnation. To condemn is a terrible passion, but to be fought by such thoughts and to fight back—this is an occasion for crowns.

Ας μετανοήσωμεν ειλικρινά, ας εξομολογηθώμεν καθαρά και λεπτομερώς. Ας μας απασχολή συνεχώς το κριτήριον του Θεού και η απόφασις Τούτου και να λέγωμεν: « Άράγε θα σωθώμεν ή θα αντικρύσωμεν τα βασανιστήρια των κολάσεων;» Τώρα πρέπει, και μάλλον συνεχώς να χύνωμεν δάκρυα μετανοίας. Αχ, πόσον πρέπει να μας απασχολή το πώς και κατά πόσον το ένδυμα της ψυχής μας είναι λευκόν και καθαρόν! Πρέπει να το λευκάνωμεν διαφορετικά δεν δυνάμεθα να παρουσιασθώμεν εμπρός εις τον Χριστόν μας καθώς είμεθα.
Η μελέτη του θανάτου δεν πρέπει να μας διαφεύγη καθόλου από το ωράριον της μοναχικής ζωής.

Slander is a great evil. Just as the little rudder steers the whole ship wherever it wants, likewise the tongue leads a person either to good or to evil. The holy fathers greatly censure judging other people’s sins, faults, or evil habits. When we judge our brother, we condemn ourselves to a great sin. But when we cover our brother, God will also protect us from great sins. When we expose our brother, we drive the grace of God away from us and He permits us to fall into the same sins so that we learn that we are all weak and that the grace of God supports us. Whoever guards his tongue guards his soul from great sins and grievous falls. The chief cause of criticism and slander is pride and egotism, because one considers oneself better than the others. For this reason it is very beneficial for a person to think of himself as below everyone, so that he considers his brother than him in order that, with the help of God, he may be delivered from this evil.

Μη φοβού, μηδέ δειλιάτω η καρδία σου, ο Χριστός μας αοράτως σε βοηθεί κρυφία χειρί, σε δοκιμάζει δια να σου δώση την χάριν Του.
Όσον γεωργείται η γη της καρδίας και όσον πιο βαθειά ο γεωργός βάζει το αλέτρι, τόσον περισσότερον καρπόν θα δώση το χωράφι εις τον καιρόν του. Ούτω κάνει και ο μέγας γεωργός, ο Θεός, την ψυχήν μας. Μας αφήνει να έρχονται πειρασμοί και θλίψεις και πόνος και στενοχωρία, να εισέρχωνται βαθειά εις την καρδίαν και πολλάκις να ευρισκώμεθα εις αδιέξοδον, το πώς θα τα καταφέρωμεν με αυτόν ή εκείνον τον πειρασμόν, και πάσχει και οδυνάται ο άνθρωπος, αλλά εις τους αγαπώντας τον Θεόν, συνεργεί ο Θεός να γίνωνται εις αγαθήν έκβασιν.

Ignorance, my child, is known as the soul’s death. Ignorance does not enlighten a sick person; it does not say to him: “Your illness is the will of God, and you ought to pass through it with patience and thankfulness, so that you will not become a transgressor before God with your impatience!” To the enlightened Christian, however, knowledge of God’s will not only makes him bear everything with thankfulness, but also helps him acquire a strong spiritual constitution and at the same time obtain the refreshment of consolation. He reflects: “By undergoing these pains and afflictions I am doing God’s will, and this will bring about the forgiveness of my previous offences. By paying here the debt of my sentence, I shall receive my freedom there in the life to come, where I shall live eternally—whereas here, no matter how much suffering I may undergo, it is temporary and short-lived”. So my child, we need patience so as not to be condemned with the unrepentant world. Regardless of what might happen to us, through patience everything is put aright, and the inner man will find peace, bearing patiently what God has allowed. Bear your cross, and I shall bear mine, as we follow the heavenly Bridegroom, Christ, Who for us ungrateful sinners bore a Cross of disgrace. What do we bear that is equal in worth to such good things that we enjoy from God? If I were to enumerate the blessings of God and the ingratitude of man, I think my mind would stop; for how can the finite mind comprehend the infinite benefactions of God towards man?

Την ελπίδα της σωτηρίας ποτέ μη χάνης και να βοάς προς τον Θεόν και να κλαις. Ο Θεός ποτέ δεν παραβλέπει μίαν ψυχήν που θέλει να σωθή και μετανοεί, όσον και αν τραυματίζεται εις τον αγώνα. Γνωρίζει ο Θεός, πόσον ασθενής είναι η φύσις μας. Πόθεν θα εύρη την δύναμιν ο πηλός να βαστάζη την πίεσιν του νερού, εάν ο Θεός δεν τον ψήση με την χάριν του Αγίου Πνεύματος; Γνωρίζει ως αλάνθαστος οφθαλμός ότι μόλις μας αφήση, πίπτομεν και χανόμεθα. Δια τούτο δεν μας αφήνει να πειρασθώμεν, όσον ο διάβολος επιθυμεί. Εάν μας άφηνε, συσσώμους θα μας έρριπτε εις την κόλασιν, αλλά ο αγαθός Θεός τον εμποδίζει και τον αφήνει τόσον, όσον δύναται να βαστάξη η κάθε ψυχή. Όσον και αν τραυματισθώμεν εις τον αγώνα, ας μη αποθαρρυνθώμεν, αλλά ας επιμεληθώμεν τας πληγάς μας και ας συνεχίσωμεν τον αγώνα. Βλέποντας ο Θεός τον κόπον μας και την μικράν θέλησιν της σωτηρίας μας, θα μας δώση την νίκην. Μεγάλον κακόν το να χάση το θάρρος του επάνω εις τον αγώνα ο αγωνιστής, διότι αμέσως ο αντίπαλος ορμά με λύσσαν, ίνα τον νικήση. Δια τούτο, παιδί μου, να δίδης θάρρος εις την ψυχήν σου και να ελπίζης. Θα αποθάνω εις τον αγώνα υπέρ της δόξης του Θεού, να λέγης, παρά να λυπήσω τον Θεόν μου, εγκαταλείποντας τον αγώνα μου εναντίον του διαβόλου.

Since Christ is the light of the world, those who do not see Him, who do not believe in Him, are all most certainly blind. Conversely, all who strive to practice the commandments of Christ walk in the light; they confess Christ and venerate and worship Him as God. Whoever confesses Christ and regards Him as his Lord and God is strengthened by the power of the invocation of His name to do His will. But if he is not strengthened, it is evident that he confesses Christ only with his mouth, while in his heart he is far from Him.

Μα ηξεύρεις πόσον ζητούν βοήθειαν οι κοιμηθέντες! Επειδή μετά θάνατον δεν υπάρχει μετάνοια και ως άνθρωποι και αυτοί έφυγαν με κηλίδας και μώμους και βλέπουν ότι η βοήθεια των ζώντων πολύ συνεργεί εις το να τελειοποιηθούν και ησυχάσουν, ποθούν, ζητούν, νοσταλγούν να τους μνημονεύη κανείς, ποθούν επίσης από το γένος των να ευρεθή κανένας παπάς ή ενάρετος χριστιανός, που να μεριμνήση και δι΄ αυτούς. Θα σου γράψω μίαν οπτασίαν ενός επισκόπου, που είδεν, και την οποίαν ήκουσα από το στόμα του επισκόπου, που συλλειτούργησα προ ετών.
Μας λέγει ότι ήτο ένας παπάς, που τον είχε νικήσει το κρασί και συχνά εμεθούσε, εργασία ετών, κατά τα άλλα ήτο ενάρετος και ευλαβής. Μίαν των ημερών κατά την συνήθειαν ήπιε κρασί και εμέθυσε και κατόπιν πριν ξεμεθύση καλά, επήγε και ελειτούργησε και κατά παραχώρησιν Θεού του έπεσε το άγιον Σώμα και Αίμα του Κυρίου! Ο καημένος επάγωσε από τον φόβον του, συνάμα δε εσκέπτετο και τον μεγάλον κανόνα του επισκόπου του! Τέλος αφού εξωμολογήθη, του λέγει ο επίσκοπος, «Πήγαινε, και θα σε ειδοποιήσω να έλθης και θα σου δώσω τον κανόνα». Εκεί λοιπόν που εσκέπτετο ο επίσκοπος και διελογίζετο και έλαβε εις το χέρι του την πέννα να γράψη την καθαίρεσιν της ιερωσύνης, ευρισκόμενος μόνος του, βλέπει εμπρός του να εκτυλίσσεται σαν ταινία κινηματογραφική, ένα άπειρον πλήθος κόσμου, παντός είδους, ηλικίας και τάξεως, ο επίσκοπος έμεινεν έκθαμβος από το πράγμα, αλλά συνάμα και από φόβον. Τότε του λέγουν όλοι μαζί οι άνθρωποι αυτοί: «Σεβασμιώτατε νη κανονίσετε τον παπά, μη τον καθαιρήτε», κατόπιν ολίγον κατ΄ ολίγον έγιναν άφαντοι. Φωνάζει ο επίσκοπος τον παπά να έλθη, έμφοβος ο καημένος ο παπάς εσκέπτετο την καθαίρεσίν του. Του λέγει ο επίσκοπος: «Δεν μου λέγεις, μνημονεύεις πολλά ονόματα εις την λειτουργίαν;» Ο παπάς απαντά: «Εις την προσκομιδήν, δέσποτα, πολλήν ώραν μνημονεύω από βασιλείς, αυτοκράτορας μέχρι και τον πλέον φτωχόν». Ο επίσκοπος του λέγει: «Πήγαινε λοιπόν, και όταν λειτουργής μνημόνευε όσον ημπορείς και πρόσεχε του λοιπού μη μεθύσης, είσαι συγχωρημένος». Κατόπιν και ο παπάς με την βοήθειαν του Θεού ελυτρώθη από την μέθην.

Do you know how much help the departed seek! Since there is no repentance after death, and as humans they also departed with stains and blemishes, and since they see that the help of the living greatly assists them to be perfected and find rest, they yearn, seek, and long for someone to commemorate them. They also long for one of their descendants to become a priest or a virtuous Christian who will care for them.
Let me tell you about a vision of a certain bishop which he himself told me while we were serving together years ego. He told us that there was a priest who had a drinking problem and often got drunk; this was going on for many years. Other than this, though, the priest was virtuous and pious. One day he drank wine as usual and got drunk, and then before he was fully sober, he went and served Liturgy. So God allowed an accident to happen: he spilled the holy Body and Blood of the Lord! The poor fellow froze with fear, while also thinking about the heavy penance his bishop would give him! Finally, after he confessed, his bishop told him, “Go—I will notify you when to return, and then I’ll give you the penance”. So as the bishop was all alone reflecting and pondering, and as he picked up a pen to write his decision to depose him, he saw an endless multitude of people of every age, kind, and class unwind before him like a movie. The bishop was stunned by this vision but was also overcome with fear. Then all those people together said to him, “Your Eminence, do not punish the priest; do not depose him”. Then, little by little, they disappeared. Afterwards, the bishop called the priest to come. The poor priest was terrified, thinking about being deposed. The bishop said to him, “Tell me something, do you commemorate many names when you serve Liturgy?” The priest answered, “In the proskomidi, Your Eminence, I commemorate names for a long time—from kings and emperors down to the last pauper”. The bishop then said to him, “Go, then, and whenever you serve Liturgy, commemorate as many people as you can, and take care not to get drunk anymore. You are pardoned”. Thereafter, the priest—with the help of God—was delivered from drinking.
