Δόξα τω μόνω σοφώ Θεώ, όπου γνωρίζει από το πικρόν να εξάγη γλυκύ και ούτω να πλουτίζη τας γνώσεις μας εκ της περί ημάς απεράντου αγάπης Του. Μας μαστίζει δια των θλίψεων και των πειρασμών, ίνα δυνηθή να μας ελκύση κοντά Του, διότι γνωρίζει ότι δια των θλιβερών της παρούσης ζωής ο άνθρωπος παραμένει κοντά Του και σώζεται.
Η άνετος ζωή λίαν επικίνδυνος δια την αιώνιον σωτηρίαν και εις τους εν ανέσει ζώντας ου το του Θεού Πνεύμα κατοικεί, αλλά το του διαβόλου, κατά την έκφρασιν των πατέρων.
Δια τούτο εις τα θλιβερά της ζωής αυτής χρειαζόμεθα να έχωμεν υπομονήν και ευχαριστίαν, διότι λίαν ευχαριστείται ο Θεός εις αμφοτέρας τας αρετάς ταύτας. Είθε ο Κύριος να μας δώση πολλήν υπομονήν εις τα θλιβερά της ζωής μας, δια να ευχαριστώμεν εις όλα τον αγαθοδότην Προνοητήν μας.

Struggle, my child; isn’t the present life a time for struggling? Isn’t the life of every earthly man but a dream? Raise the noetic eyes of your soul and behold heavenly hosts of angels and archangels. Lift up the eyes of your mind higher and behold the blissful place of Lucifer, who was once a rising star, now empty. Oh, what a great destination! What a supremely holy calling! There, by the throne of God, souls will see the divine beauty of Christ and will be led up from knowledge to knowledge and from theoria to theoria with a superabundance of riches of divine grace! But in order to obtain these heavenly blessings, we must display bravery and mettle, and must engage in battles without turning our backs in defeat, keeping before us Jesus, Who said to us: “be of good cheer; I have overcome the world” (Jn. 16:33 ), and “The ruler of this world will be cast out” (Jn. 12:31 ). So, trusting in the invincible power of the crucified Christ, let us dedicate ourselves with simplicity to the struggle of the monastic life, and let us keep smothering the immaculate feet of our Savior with kisses, shedding tears of gratitude and joy. Who, then, shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or nakedness, etc.? (cf. Rom. 8:35 ). “I count all things as rubbish, that I may gain Christ” (Phil. 3:8 ), cried out the mouth of Paul. Aren’t we obliged to imitate Paul and attain the same grace and love towards Christ that he had? Yes, but do we struggle as he did? Have we—have I –also gone through everything that he went through for his beloved Christ? No. This is why I am bare—or rather dressed in rags and covered with shame, and I am deluded, thinking that I am wearing a glorious diadem. Woe to me, woe to me the wretch! Who shall illuminate my darkness, so that I may see my wretchedness?

A physician torments a sick person with operations, bitter medicines, amputation of body parts, etc., with the purpose, of course, of curing him and not of torturing him out of wickedness. Likewise God, as the Physician of our souls and bodies, heals us with all kinds of medicines, afflictions, and sufferings to give us our spiritual health, which is the greatest good that exists. But those who are indignant and do not bear it patiently—like me—lose the spiritual benefit and thus gain only pain. So since God saves us in such a miraculous way, we have the necessary obligation to thank Him unceasingly and to bless His All-holy Name. We should do so not only with our mouth, but primarily with our works, so that no deed of ours may offend God’s grandeur. For if we bless Him with our lips and revile Him with our works, then we are mocking Him. Let us make an effort not to grieve our Christ by any offense, so that the Holy Spirit may rest in our souls. Amen.

Βασανισμένο μου παιδί, ειρήνη και γαλήνη εις την ψυχούλα σου να χαρίση η Παναγία μας. Έλαβα το γράμμα σου, σε επόνεσα πολύ, κάμνε υπομονήν, παιδί μου, ο Θεός δεν θα σε αφήση. Θα αλλάξη η κατάστασίς σου, αλλοίωσις είναι, έτσι έχει χαράξει ο Θεός τον βίον εκάστου ανθρώπου, το να υποφέρη εις αυτόν τον κόσμον, δια να εύρη εις τον άλλον, τον μακάριον κόσμον, ανάπαυσιν και χαράν.
Εδώ, τέκνον μου, ας πληρώσωμεν τα χρέη των αμαρτιών μας εν υπομονή και καρτερία, και μετά τον θάνατον γενικής ελευθερίας να αξιωθώμεν.
Μη στενοχωρήσαι, μη τα βάζης μέσα σου, τα νεύρα σου, δημιουργούν αυτάς τας αλλοιώσεις και σε πλανούν πως δεν έχεις στοργήν κ.λ.π. Θα περάσουν και τότε με δάκρυα θα αναγνωρίζης πόσον λανθασμένα έκρινες τα πράγματα. Εύχομαι ο Θεός να σου χαρίση υπομονήν μέχρι τέλους.

Η αμαρτία ως κέντρον, βαμμένη με την αρμόζουσαν ηδονήν, έρχεται ύπουλα, ως γλυκεία και χαριτωμένη μέχρι γλώσσης, δια να προσβάλη την ψυχήν. Όμως ο δελεασθείς από την ολιγόστιγμον ηδονήν και ανάπαυσιν αυτής, πικροτέραν δηλητηρίου και καταστρεπτικωτέραν λοιμικής νόσου θα την αισθανθή επί του πνευματικού οργανισμού του.

Εύχομαι να γίνης τελείως καλά… Τι να κάνωμεν; Μας παιδεύει ο Κύριος, ίνα έχωμεν μισθόν αιώνιον, διότι εφ’ όσον δεν έχομεν άσκησιν, μας δίδει ο Κύριος ασθενείας και θλίψεις, δια να μας λογισθή ως άσκησις, δια να έχωμεν μικράν παρηγορίαν, όταν θα κρινώμεθα ενώπιόν Του. Τι να κάνωμεν, παιδί μου, έτσι θέλει ο Θεός μας. Να υποφέρωμεν δια να εύρωμεν ανάπαυσιν εις τον μέλλοντα κόσμον. Εδώ προσωρινά όλα, εκεί αιώνια. Δριμύς ο χειμών, γλυκύς ο παράδεισος. Ας παγώσουν οι πόδες, ίνα χορεύσουν αιώνια! Δόξα σοι ο Θεός.

Μη λυπήσαι δια τίποτε άλλο, παρά όταν δεν κάνης εις καμμίαν υπόθεσιν υπομονήν. Και τούτο διότι ανυπομονώντας ζημιώνεσαι μισθόν αιώνιον και παρρησίαν ου την τυχούσαν! Προσεύχου, όπως σου προσθέση ο Κύριος πλούτον υπομονής και μακροθυμίας, και δια του τοιούτου πλούτου και άλλους θα πλουτίσης. Μη χάνης, δέομαι, το πνευματικόν σου θάρρος, αλλά άντλησε τούτο εκ της κραταιάς πίστεως εις τον Θεόν, Όστις δεν θα μας αφήση να πειρασθώμεν πέραν των δυνάμεών μας.
